Short Description

Researchers at UCLA have developed a novel oxygen reduction reaction catalyst based on transition metal doped platinum-nickel octahedral materials. This stable catalyst has demonstrated record specific activities and unprecedented mass activity, approaching two orders of magnitude higher mass activity than that of commercially available advanced platinum-based catalysts.Fig. 4 Computational Results

AbstractResearchers at UCLA have developed a novel doped platinum-nickel catalyst that has demonstrated record specific activities and mass activity that are orders of magnitude higher than that of commercially available advanced platinum-based catalyst.

Tagschemicals, Nanomaterials

Posted DateOct 12, 2017 12:00 PM

Advantages

  • Record specific activities 51 fold higher than advanced Pt/C catalyst at 0.93V
  • Unprecedented mass activity of 3.3 A/mg at 0.9V

Potential Applications

  • Fuel cells
  • Oxygen reduction reaction (redox) applications

Additional Information

Background

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts are usually based on platinum-carbon materials. Recently, platinum-nickel materials, specifically PtNi octahedral configurations, have been of interest due to their greater activity, yet significant advances have yet to be realized.Furthermore, PtNi nanostructures tend to suffer from degradability under ORR conditions.
